Beijing afternoon

Students will start at the Summer Palace. This is an example of Imperial-era extravagance. Historians say Dowager Empress Cixi was throwing the country’s money away, decorating the Summer Palace during hard times. Nevertheless, today the Summer Palace is one of the best examples of Imperial China. Then, Students will go explore the famous Beijing Hutongs, these last examples of the true Beijinger lifestyle, as it existed for hundreds of years- the houses built tightly upon each other, a maze of narrow passageways. This is the real Beijing. Students will explore the maze and then have dinner in a Hutong restaurant. Beijing duck, anyone? 🙂
